About Mingi

Rapper and dancer who was a member of the K-pop band ATEEZ. His full name is Song Min-gi, and he came in 62nd place on the MIXNINE Showcase JUST DANCE.

Mingi is a traditional belief among the Karo and Hamar speaking omotic peoples of southern Ethiopia that children have physical and cognitive abnormalities that are in fact not formally unique. An example of a known abnormality includes the upper teeth protruding before the lower teeth. Children out of wedlock are also considered unclean and therefore capable of bearing curses on the people. Fear of curses or misfortunes against the tribe leads to the murder of many children. These children are manipulated by drowning, putting soil in their mouths, and strangling or leaving infants in the woods. The elders decide to tag a child, but the deaths are committed by different members of the tribe. The Karo tribe officially banned the practice of mingi in July 2012, but it remains an active part of the belief system among others. It is believed that up to 686,000 people practice it secretly in other advocacy communities.
