Mireya Elisa Moscoso Rodríguez de Arias is a Panamanian politician who served as President of Panama from 1999 to 2004. She was the country's first female President. Born into a rural family, Moscoso became active during Arnulfo Arias's 1968 presidential campaign, following up on and marrying him as he lived in exile following a military coup. . After her death in 1988, she took control of her coffee business and later her political party, the Arnulfista Party. In the 1994 presidential election, she lost 4% of the vote to Democratic Revolutionary Party candidate Ernesto Pérez Balladares. In the 1999 general election, she beat PRD candidate Martín Torrijos 8% to become Panama's first female president. During her tenure, she presided over the transfer of the Panama Canal from the United States to Panama and the economic slowdown caused by the loss of American personnel.
