Muhammadu Buhari is a Nigerian politician, having held the Nigerian presidency since 2015. Buhari is a retired major general of the Nigerian army and was chief of the army from 1983 to 1985, having taken power during a military coup. The term Bouharism is used to refer to the authoritarian policies of his military regime. Buhari said he was responsible for everything he presided over during the army's rule and that he cannot change the past. He described himself as a “converted Democrat”. Buhari ran for President of Nigeria in 2003, 2007 and 2011. In December 2014, he ran for the Progressive Congress for the 2015 general election. Outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan. This is the first time in Nigeria's history that a sitting president loses a general election. He was sworn in on May 29, 2015.
