Beginning April 2006, he was the eighth Prime Minister of Vietnam, representing the Communist Party. He served in both the Cambodian-Vietnamese War and the Vietnam War before entering politics.

Nguyen Tan Dung is a Vietnamese politician who held the position of Prime Minister of Vietnam from 2006 to 2016. He was confirmed by the National Assembly on June 27, 2006, after the resignation of his predecessor Phan Van Khai, who had retired. At the party congress held in January 2011, Nguyen Tan Dung was ranked third in the Communist Party of Vietnam hierarchy, after state president Truong Tan Sang. After the XII National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyen Tan Dung failed to take up his post in the Party and resigned as Prime Minister on April 7, 2016
