Inventor of the light-emitting diode, dubbed the"Father of the LED". He has received accolades from George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Emperor Akihito of Japan, and Vladimir Putin, and he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2008.
Nick Holonyak Jr. is an American engineer and educator. He was particularly noted for the invention of a light emitting diode in 1962 which emitted visible red light instead of infrared light; Holonyak showed off the LED on October 9, 1962 while working at General Electric's research lab in Syracuse, New York. He is John Bardeen's Honorary Chairman of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he has worked since leaving General Electric in 1963
