Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon is a Scottish politician who has served as First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party since 2014. She has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament since 1999, the first time in addition to the constituency of Glasgow, and has served as a Member of Glasgow Southside since 2007. A law graduate from the University of Glasgow, Sturgeon worked as a lawyer in Glasgow. After being elected to the Scottish Parliament, she continued to serve as SNP shadow minister for education, health and justice. In 2004, she announced that she would run for the SNP leadership post after John Swinney resigned. However, she later withdrew from the competition to support Alex Salmond, instead taking the alternate leadership role on a joint ticket with Salmond. Both were subsequently elected and, although Salmond remained a member of Congress in the House of Representatives, Sturgeon led the SNP in the Scottish Parliament from 2004 to 2007.
