Nova Maree Peris is an Australian Aboriginal athlete and former politician. A member of the Australian women's hockey team at the 1996 Olympics, she was the first Australian Aboriginal person to win an Olympic gold medal. She then switched from sports to sprinting and attended the 1998 and 2000 Commonwealth Olympics. She was elected to the Australian Senate in the 2013 federal election, after Prime Minister Julia Gillard called her a "choice. captain, "placing her in a shortlisted Labor candidate instead of incumbent Labor Senator Trish Crossin. She retired from the Senate in 2016
