Before declaring for the NBA, he played one season of college basketball at USC. The Atlanta Hawks selected him sixth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Okongwu is a four-year-old newbie at Chino Hills High School in California, playing alongside Lonzo and LaMelo Ball. As a rookie, he helped his team win state championships and achieve national success, and was named MaxPreps' national freshman. During his junior and senior seasons, Okongwu led Chino Hills to two more state-level titles, while also winning the Mr. California Basketball title in a row. He is considered by ESPN and Rivals to be a five-star player. In his only college season, Okongwu played for USC and was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team.
