Patrick Joseph Leahy is an American politician and lawyer as Acting President of the United States Senate and a United States Senator from Vermont. Leahy was first elected to the Senate in 1974, and previously served as Interim President from 2012 to 2015. He served as Chairman of the Senate Exploitation Committee. As a member of the Democratic Party, Leahy is currently in her eighth term. He is the oldest member of the Senate and the last of the "Children of Watergate" of the Senate - a Democrat who was first elected to Congress in 1974, after President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 after the Watergate scandal. Leahy is also the only incumbent senator to serve during Gerald Ford's presidency, and is one of only two people to serve during Jimmy Carter's term. The head of the state's congressional delegation, Leahy was the longest-serving U.S. senator from Vermont, as well as the only Democrat ever elected to the U.S. Senate from Vermont.
