Paul Charles Merson is an English football television professional, former professional football player and manager. Initially a forward, Merson found success as an attacking midfielder and constructor later in his career. After making his Arsenal debut in 1986–87, Merson played 11 seasons with the North London club. Along with the Gunners, Merson played a key role in the club's success under Scottish manager George Graham, twice winning the British Football Federation, FA Cup, English Football Confederation Cup and European Cup. In 1997, he joined Middlesbrough, helped the club advance to the Premier League and finished runner-up at the 1997-1998 Football Confederation Cup. After joining Aston Villa in 1998, Merson became the club's captain and played for the team in the 2000 FA Cup final, the last game held at the original Wembley Stadium.
