Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, is a former Brazilian professional footballer who played as a striker. Considered one of the greatest footballers of all time and dubbed "the greatest" by FIFA, he was one of the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century. In 1999, Pelé was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation for Football Statistics and History and was one of two FIFA World Player of the Century awards. That same year, Pelé was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and named by Time on its list of the 100 most important personalities of the 20th century. According to IFFHS, Pelé is the sport's top scorer with 541 goals in 560 games. His total of 1,279 goals after 1,363 matches, including friendlies, is a Guinness world record.

From 1966 until 1982, he was married to Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi, and from 1994 to 2008, he was married to Assiria Nascimento. In 2016, he married Marcia Aoki, his third wife. With Rosemeri, he had two daughters and a son, as well as twins with Assiria.
