Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg is an American politician who served as US Secretary of Transportation since February 3, 2021. He was the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana from 2012 to 2020. Buttigieg graduated from Harvard University and Oxford University, and later joined the Rhodes Scholarship. From 2009 to 2017, he was an intelligence officer in the United States Naval Reserve, earning the rank of lieutenant. He was maneuvered and deployed during the war in Afghanistan for seven months in 2014. Prior to being elected mayor of South Bend in 2011, Buttigieg worked on political campaigns by Democrats Jill. Long Thompson, Joe Donnelly and John Kerry, and were unsuccessfully introduced as Democrat candidates for the Indiana state treasurer in 2010. During his tenure as mayor, Buttigieg became openly gay in 2015. He married Chasten Glezman, a teacher, writer and LGBT rights activist, in June 2018. Buttigieg refused to seek a third term as mayor.
