Peter Bolesław Schmeichel, MBE is a former Danish professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is best remembered for his most successful years at English club Manchester United, for which he led to victory in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final to complete the treble, and to UEFA Euro 1992 with Denmark. Born in Gladsaxe, Copenhagen, Schmeichel is known for his intimidating physique - 1.91m tall and nearly 100kg on game days - and wears a specially designed XXXL football shirt. As a fierce competitor, he is known for his loud and flawless criticism of mistakes his defenders recognize. Unusual for a goalkeeper, Schmeichel has scored 11 goals in his career, including one for the national team. He is also the most popular player of the Danish national team, with 129 games from 1987 to 2001. In addition to the Euro 92 championship, he played for his country in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and three other European championships.
