The wife of Juan Carlos I King of Spain and the mother of King Felipe VI of Spain, Queen Sofia of Spain was born Princess Sophia Margarita Victoria Frederika of Greece and Denmark.

Sofia was Queen of Spain from 1975 to 2014 as the wife of King Juan Carlos I. Born Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark, she was the first child of King Paul of Greece and Frederica of Hanover. Since her family was forced into exile during World War II, she has spent part of her childhood in Egypt returning to Greece in 1946. She completed her secondary education at a boarding school in Germany before returning to Greece, where she specialized in childcare, music and archeology. She became queen after her husband was crowned in 1975. On June 19, 2014, Juan Carlos abdicated to support their son, Felipe VI.
