Before drafting, he was considered a top player. After gaining success with the US National Hockey Team Development Program, Hughes joined the University of Michigan in the 2017-18 season. Here, he set a new record for the most assists for a Michigan freshman defender and was named in the All-Big Ten and All-Big Ten Second Team Freshman Teams. Internationally, Hughes has represented the United States at the 2018 Kids World Ice Hockey Championships and the 2019 World Ice Hockey Championships. country for the US team at the IIHF World Ice Hockey World Championship 2018 where he helped them win bronze.
