Rubio became the youngest player to play in the ACB Spanish league on October 15, 2005, at the age of 14. He made his EuroLeague debut on 24 October 2006, at the age of 16, becoming the first player born in the 1990s to play in a EuroLeague match. He is the fifth youngest player to make his EuroLeague debut since 2000. On June 25, 2009, he was chosen for the fifth time by the Timberwolves in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft, making him the first. The player born in 1990 was drafted by the NBA. The Timberwolves had a principled deal with his former side, DKV Joventut, to buy back his contract, but Rubio turned it down. On August 31, 2009, Joventut traded Rubio's ownership with FC Barcelona, and Rubio signed a six-year contract with FC Barcelona the next day.
