Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna, known professionally as Rubén Blades, is a Panamanian musician, singer, songwriter, actor, activist and politician, most often performing music in salsa and Latin jazz. As a musician, Blades brought the lyrical flair of the Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova as well as the experimental tempo and political inspiration Son Cubano salsa into his music, creating "the erotic music Dance of the “thought.” Blades wrote dozens of popular songs, including “Pedro Navaja” and “El Cantante”. It won nine Grammy Awards out of a total of seventeen nominations and five Latin Grammy Awards. His acting career began in 1983 and continues, sometimes taking several years to focus on other projects.
