Sali Ram Berisha is an Albanian conservative politician who served as Albania's second President from 1992 to 1997 and Prime Minister from 2005 to 2013. He is also the leader of the Albanian Democratic Party twice, from 1991 to 1992, then again from 1997 to 2013. Berisha is the longest democratically elected leader to date. Former secretary of the Labor Party Committee at the Medical Faculty of Tirana University, he gave up his career as a cardiologist and university professor to become leader of the Democratic Party in the 1990s. Communism collapsed, he was Albania's first non-communist president until his government collapsed in 1997 following the collapse of the infamous pyramid systems. From 1997 to 2005, Albania was ruled by the Socialist Party for two terms, while it remained in opposition.
