Sandra Day O'Connor is a retired lawyer and politician who served as the first female deputy judge of the US Supreme Court between 1981 and 2006. She was the first female to be appointed and confirmed. . Named by President Ronald Reagan, it was seen as a rotating ballot for Rehnquist Court and the start of Roberts Court. Prior to O'Connor's tenure on the court, she was a judge and elected in Arizona, and was the first woman to lead the state Senate majority as the Republican leader in the Arizona Senate. After being appointed to the Court, O'Connor was unanimously confirmed by the Senate. On July 1, 2005, she announced her intention to retire upon confirmation of her successor. Samuel Alito was appointed as its President in October 2005 and joined the Court on January 31, 2006. She often sided with conservative bloc of the Court.
