He was elected as Finland's twelfth president in 2012, and is known for his involvement in the National Coalition Party. He formerly served as the Finnish Parliament's Speaker, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Justice, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Justice.
Sauli Väinämö Niinistö is a Finnish politician who held the 12th Presidency and has been in charge of Finland since 2012. As a lawyer by training, Niinistö was President of the National Union Party from 1994 to 2001, Minister of Justice from 1995 to 1996, Minister of Finance from 1996 to 2003, Deputy Prime Minister from 1995 to 2001 and candidate of the National Union Party in the presidential election. 2006. He was President of the Finnish Parliament from 2007 to 2011 and Honorary President European People's Party since 2002. Niinistö was the NCP's 2012 presidential candidate, defeating the Green League's Pekka Haavisto with 62.6% of the vote in the second round. Niinistö took office on March 1, 2012 and was the first conservative president since Juho Kusti Paasikivi, who stepped down in 1956. In May 2017, Niinistö announced that he would stand for election again. Presidential election 2018, stand as independent candidate.
