He is a former General Secretary of the United Nations. . and ran for Secretary General in 2006. He is also Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and the All-India Expert Congress. Before that, he served as Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs. In 2019, Shashi Tharoor received the Sahitya Academy Award for the book An Era of Darkness in the non-fiction category in English. Born in London, UK and raised in India, Tharoor graduated from St. Patrick School. Stephen's College, Delhi in 1975 and completed his studies in 1978 with a Ph.D. in international affairs and affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
