In January 1959, Bassey became the first Welshman to win a single No. 1. In 2000, Bassey was named Commander Dame of the British Empire for her activities in the performing arts field. In 1977, she received the Brit Award for Best British Solo Artist for the previous 25 years. Bassey is one of Britain's most famous singers.
