Sonia Gandhi is an Indian politician. She is the president of the National Congress of India, the left-wing political party, which has ruled for much of its post-independence history. She took over as party leader in 1998, seven years after the assassination of her husband, Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, and was in office for 22 years. Born in a small village near Vicenza, Italy, Gandhi grew up in a Roman Catholic family. After completing her primary education in local schools, she transferred to language courses in Cambridge, England, where she met Rajiv Gandhi, then married him in 1968. She then moved to India and started to live with his mother-in-law. The Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, in the last mansion in New Delhi. Sonia Gandhi, however, has kept away from the public even during her husband's years as prime minister.
