Sonia Maria Sotomayor is an associate judge at the US Supreme Court. She was appointed by President Barack Obama on May 26, 2009 and has served since 8 August 2009. Sotomayor was the first Hispanic and Latin American member of the court. Sotomayor was born in the Bronx, New York, to Puerto Rican parents. Her father died when she was nine, and she was later raised by her mother. Sotomayor graduated from the University of Princeton University in 1976 and received her Ph.D. in Law from Yale Law School in 1979, where she was the editor of the Yale Law Journal. She worked as an assistant county attorney in New York for four and a half years before starting private practice in 1984. She served on the board of the Puerto Rico Legal and Defense Education Foundation, the World Bank. State of New York. and New York City Campaign Finance Council.
