Sylvester Turner is an American lawyer and politician and the 62nd mayor of Houston, Texas. A member of the Democratic Party, Turner was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1989 to 2016. He attended the University of Houston and Harvard Law School. Turner ran for mayor of Houston in 1991, losing to Bob Lanier in the cross-border election. He lost again in 2003, placing third and therefore missed the sprint. Turner won the 2015 election, beating Bill King in the race with 4,082 votes out of 212,696 votes in the last mayoral election in Houston history by percentage. On December 14, 2019, Turner won his second term as mayor against the more conservative Tony Buzbee, with a ratio of 56 to 44% out of a total of less than 20% of registered voters.
