She made a name for herself with her first series, The Song of the Lioness, following protagonist Alanna overcoming challenges and gaining knight training. Pierce won the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association of the American Library Association in 2013, citing his two quartets Song of the Lioness and Protector of the Small. An annual prize rewards a particular writer and group of works for "a significant and lasting contribution to children's literature". Pierce's book has been translated into twenty languages.
