Tavis Smiley is an American chat show host and author. Smiley was born in Gulfport, Mississippi and raised in Bunker Hill, Indiana. After attending Indiana University, he worked in the late 1980s as an assistant to Tom Bradley, mayor of Los Angeles. Smiley became a radio commentator in 1991, and since 1996, he has hosted the BET Talk show on Black Entertainment Television. After Smiley sold an exclusive interview with Sara Jane Olson to ABC News in 2001, BET refused to renew her contract that year. Smiley then began hosting The Tavis Smiley Show on National Public Radio and hosted Tavis Smiley on weekdays public broadcast and The Tavis Smiley Show on Public Radio International from 2004 to 2017 when he I get fired for having sex with my subordinates. From 2010 to 2013, Smiley and Cornel West worked together to host their own radio show, Smiley & West.
