Aaron Dontez Yates, known as Tech N9ne, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, actor and businessman. In 1999, he and his business partner Travis O'Guin founded Strange Music. He has sold over two million albums and featured his music in movies, TV shows and video games. In 2009, he won the Left Field Woodie Award at the mtvU Woodie Awards. Its stage name is derived from the TEC-9 semi-automatic pistol, named for it by rapper Black Walt for its fast-paced chopper style. Yates then applies a deeper meaning to the name, claiming that it represents the complete rhyme technique, with the technique meaning "tech" and "nine" representing the complete number.
