After playing as a striker in Europe and at the Continental Basketball Association, where he was coached by George Karl, Stotts became part of Karl's coaching staff on several CBA and NBA teams. He then got the chance to be the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks, before helping the Dallas Mavericks win the 2011 NBA Championship as an assistant coach.
