Thomas Edward Perez is an American politician and lawyer who served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from February 2017 to January 2021. Perez was previously Deputy Attorney General for Civil Rights and United States Secretary of Labor. Born in Buffalo, New York, Perez is a graduate of Brown University, Harvard Law School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. He served as a secretary to Judge Zita Weinshienk in Colorado before serving as a federal civil rights attorney for the Department of Justice. He continued to work for Senator Ted Kennedy, then Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services during the final years of the Clinton administration. Perez was then elected to the Montgomery County Council in 2002, serving as chairman of the board from 2005, until his term ended in 2006 .
