Republican politician who served as Governor of Wisconsin from 1987 to 2001, making him the state's longest-serving governor. From 2001 until 2005, he served as the 19th Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Tommy George Thompson is an American Republican politician and the incumbent president of the University of Wisconsin system, serving provisionally as of July 1, 2020. He previously served as the 42nd and 19th United States Secretary of Health and Human Services social work of the Governor of Wisconsin, in the office of US President George W. Bush. He was the longest serving governor in Wisconsin history, serving from January 1987 to February 2001, and was the only person elected to that office four times. During his tenure as governor, he also served as president of Amtrak, the country's passenger rail service. He was president of the Republican Governors Association in 1991 and 1992 and of the National Governors Association in 1995 and 1996. After working in the Bush administration, Thompson became a partner of the law firm Akin Gump and is the independent president of the Deloitte Medical Center. Solutions.
