The Central Park jogging case is a criminal case in the United States that involves the aggravated assault and rape of a white woman in Central Park in Manhattan on April 19, 1989, in a series of other attacks in the park the same night. Five young black and Latino men were convicted of assaulting the woman and sentenced to six to twelve years. All were then left vacant after an inmate confessed to the crime. From the outset, the case has been a topic of national interest, with commentary on social issues evolving as details emerge. Initially, the case led to a public debate about raising awareness in New York City about lawlessness, youth crimes, and violence against women. After the sanctions, he became a prime example of racism, discrimination and inequality in the media and legal systems.
