Burzum is a Norwegian black metal musician most recognized for his solo work as well as his prior work with Mayhem, a seminal black metal band.

Louis Cachet, better known as Varg Vikernes, is a Norwegian musician and author best known for his early black metal albums and subsequent criminal convictions. His first four records, released under the name Burzum between 1991 and 1994, made him one of the most influential figures in the black metal industry. In 1994, he was convicted of murder and arson, and then sentenced to 15 years in prison. Originally from Bergen, Vikernes spent part of his childhood in Iraq, where his father worked for the Iraqi government. He started playing guitar at the age of 14 and formed his first band, Kalashnikov, in 1989. After founding Burzum, he became part of the Norwegian black metal scene. In 1992 Vikernes, along with other members of the scene, was suspected of setting fire to four Christian churches in Norway. Vikernes takes no responsibility for the arson, although he supports them. From 1992 to 1993 he was a member of the group Mayhem and played bass on their debut album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.
