Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr is an American actor, author, musician, photographer, poet and painter. Born in New York to a Danish father and an American mother, he lived in Argentina when he was a child. He has received a number of awards, including the Screen Actors Association Award and is nominated for three Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards. Mortensen made his film debut with a minor role in Peter Weir's 1985 horror film Witnesses starring Harrison Ford and went on to appear in a number of notable films including The Indian Runner, Carlito's Way, Crimson Tide, Daylight, The Portrait of a Lady, GI Jane, Psycho, A Perfect Murder, A Moon Walk and 28 Days. Mortensen received international attention in the early 2000s for his role as Aragorn in the epic fantasy adventure trilogy The Lord of the Rings. In 2005, Mortensen was critically acclaimed for her acting in the crime thriller A History of Violence by David Cronenberg.
