He was one of the greatest cricket batsmen of all time, scoring 8,540 runs in 121 Test matches with averages in the 90s at times. He became the first player in ODI history to achieve 1,000 runs and take 50 wickets in the same match, scoring a century and taking five wickets.

He is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. In December 2002, he was chosen by Wisden as the greatest ODI player of all time, as well as the third greatest experimental player of all time, after Sir Don Bradman and Sachin Tendulkar. Richards was voted one of the Five Cricketers of the Century by a 100-member council in 2000, along with Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Jack Hobbs and Shane Warne. He is also an advisor to the T20 Quetta Gladiators Pakistan Super League team.
