Wesley Barbasa So is a Filipino American chess grandmaster, the first and current Fischer world random chess champion, and the current American chess champion. He is also a three-time Filipino chess champion. On the March 2017 FIDE Ranking List, he is ranked second in the world and has an Elo of 2,822, becoming the fifth highest-scoring player in history. Once a chess prodigy, So became the youngest player to surpass the 2,600 Elo rating in October 2008, breaking the previous record held by Magnus Carlsen. This record was broken by John M. Burke. In early 2013, So passed 2,700 and in January 2017, he became the 11th player to exceed 2,800 Elo. He therefore represented the Philippines until his move to the United States in 2014. He won the Bilbao Chess Masters 2015, the Grand Chess Tour 2016 after winning the Sinquefield Cup and the London Chess Classic, and Tata. Steel Masters 2017.
