Willie Howard Mays Jr., nicknamed "The Say Hey Kid", is an American former professional baseball center fielder. He won the Rookie of the Year Award, spent two years in the United States Army during the Korean War, and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award after leading the NL in batting with a.345 batting average in 1954. His over-the-shoulder catch of a Vic Wertz fly ball in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series is one of the most famous baseball plays of all time. The Giants swept the Cleveland Indians, the lone World Series triumph of Mays's career.
