Martha Maria Yeardley Smith is an American actress, writer and artist. She is currently participating in the long-term dubbing of the role of Lisa Simpson in the animated television series The Simpsons. Smith became an actress in 1982 after graduating from drama school. She moved to New York City in 1984, where she appeared in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing produced by Tom Stoppard. She made her film debut in the 1985 film Heaven Help Us, followed by roles in The Legend of Billie Jean and Maximum Overdrive. She moved to Los Angeles in 1986 and played a recurring role in the Brothers television series. In 1987, Smith auditioned for the Simpsons digital shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. Smith planned to audition for the role of Bart Simpson, but the curator felt her voice was too high and she was cast for the role of Lisa, Bart's sister. In 1989, the shorts were shot on their own half-hour show, The Simpsons.
