Yeon-mi Park is a North Korean defector and human rights activist who fled North Korea for China in 2007 and settled in South Korea in 2009, before settling in the United States in 2014. She comes from an educated family with political connections. trading on the black market during the North Korean economic downturn of the 1990s. After her father was sent to a labor camp for smuggling, his family faced famine. They fled to China, where Park and her mother fell into the hands of traffickers and she was sold into slavery before fleeing to Mongolia. She currently advocates for victims of human trafficking in China and works to promote human rights in North Korea and around the world. Park gained worldwide fame after giving a speech at the 2014 One Young World Summit in Dublin, Ireland - an annual summit that brings together young people from all over the world to developing solutions to global problems.

Yeonmi Park family life

Her father was a civil servant, while her mother was a nurse in the North Korean Army. Her father was imprisoned for smuggling, and her older sister, Eunmi, fled to China ahead of the rest of the family. Her father died of colon cancer while she and her mother escaped to China. She was reunited with her mother and sister in Seoul, South Korea.
