He pioneered the mbalax form of music and was nominated Senegal's Minister of Tourism and Culture in 2012. He was once labeled Senegal's most renowned living vocalist by Rolling Stone magazine.

Youssou N'Dour is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, composer, actor, businessman and politician. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine described him as "perhaps the world's most popular singer" in Senegal and much of Africa. From April 2012 to September 2013, he was Minister of Tourism of Senegal. N'Dour helped develop a popular Senegalese musical style called mbalax by all Senegambians, a genre with divine origins in the Sererian musical tradition of njuup and human initiation rituals. He is the subject of the award-winning films Retour à Gorée by Pierre-Yves Borgeaud and Youssou N'Dour: I bring what I love directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, which is premiered worldwide. In 2006, N'Dour was cast as Olaudah Equiano in the movie Amazing Grace.
