He is a Japanese illustrator and artist, as well as an instructor at the School of Visual Arts. She is well-known for her collaborations with a wide range of brands and corporations, including Gap, Pepsi, Apple, and Nike.

Yuko Shimizu is the Japanese designer that created Hello Kitty. She was born in Japan. Graduated from Musashino College of the Arts, she created Hello Kitty in Sanrio in 1974. She left Sanrio in 1976 to get married and has since been a freelance designer. She doesn't make a lot of money with Hello Kitty. Other characters she created include Angel Cat Sugar and Rebecca Bonbon. She has also published picture books.

In 2009, she was selected by Newsweek Japan for being one of "100 Japanese People The World Respects". She is also known for winning the Museum of Tolerance's Young Reader Award in 2014. 

Yuko Shimizu before fame

In 1999, she moved to New York City to pursue her ambition of becoming an illustrator and artist. The School of Visual Art awarded her an MFA in Illustration and Visual Essay. Her first self-titled monograph was published in 2011, and she followed it up in 2016 with Living With Yuko Shimizu, published by ROADS Publishing in Ireland.
