Abdi Bile is a former mid-range runner. He holds the highest number of national track and field records in Somalia in different disciplines. He currently holds the Somali national record in nine sports and is by far the most decorated athlete in Somali history. In 1987, he became the world champion at 1500 meters, being the first Somali to do so. Bile ran the last 800m of the race at a 1: 46.0 ratio, which as of the 2020s remains the fastest second half in the history of the 1,500m track. In the semifinals of similar championships, on September 4, 1987, he set a championship record with a time of 3: 35.67 lasting until September 1, 1991, being defeated by Noureddine Morceli. He defeated England's Sebastian Coe at 1500m to win the gold medal at the 1989. Continental World Cup He also won the silver at the same event at the 1985 African Championship in Cairo. In 1996, he represented Somalia at the 1996 Summer Olympics at 1,500 meters.
