Alberto Salazar is an American track and field coach, a former world-class long-distance runner and is currently being punished for doping violations involving the athletes he coaches. Born in Cuba, Salazar immigrated to the United States as a child with his family. They moved to Manchester, Connecticut, and then to Wayland, Massachusetts, where Salazar competed in athletics high school. Salazar is best known for his performance in the New York Marathon in the early 1980s and his victory in the 1982 Boston Marathon, known as "Duel in the Sun". England held the US record of 13: 11.93 per 5,000m on 6 July 1982 in Stockholm, Sweden and 27: 25.61 per 10,000m on June 26, 1982 in Oslo, Na Uy. Salazar is the head coach of the Nike Oregon Project in Portland, Oregon. He won the IAAF Coach Award in 2013 at a ceremony hosted by the International Athletics Organization in Monaco.
