Anurag Kashyap is an Indian director, writer, editor, producer, and actor known for his Hindi film work. He has received a number of awards, including four Filmfare awards. For his contributions to cinema, the French government awarded him the Medal of Arts and Literature in 2013. After writing a TV series, Kashyap took a big hiatus as a co-writer on Ram Gopal Varma's crime drama, Satya, and made his debut with Paanch, which was never released in theaters due to censorship issues. He went on to direct Black Friday, a film based on Hussain Zaidi's book of the same name on the Bombay bombing in 1993. Its release was withheld by the Central Film Certification Commission for two years due to the pending decision of the case on time, but was released in 2007 with critical review. Kashyap's follow-up, No Smoking, encountered negative reviews and underperformed at the box office.
