Axel Laurent Angel Lambert Witsel is a Belgian professional footballer playing for German club Borussia Dortmund and the Belgian national team. Witsel joined the Belgium first team as a right-wing midfielder and was able to play an attacking midfielder as well, despite his natural position as a central midfielder. He started his career at local club Standard Liège, making 183 appearances and scoring 42 goals while winning 5 national titles. He received the Belgian Golden Shoe in 2008. After a season in Portugal with Benfica, he signed Zenit Saint Petersburg for 40 million euros in 2012. Witsel won four titles during their stay in Russia, before leave Tianjin Quanjian in January. 2017. England returned to Europe with Borussia Dortmund in August 2018. Witsel made his senior international debut in 2008 and made his 100th international debut for Belgium on November 15, 2018.
