Billie Jean King is a former American professional tennis player. King has won 39 Grand Slam titles: 12 singles titles, 16 doubles titles and 11 doubles titles. She regularly represents the United States at the Confederation Cup and the Wightman Cup. She was a member of the US team that won seven League Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, she was captain of the United States at the League Cup. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer of social equality and equity. In 1973, at the age of 29, she won her tennis match "Battle of the Sexes" against Bobby Riggs, 55. She is also the founder of the Women's Tennis Association and the Women's Sports Organization. She was also instrumental in convincing tobacco brand Virginia Slims to sponsor women's tennis in the 1970s and continued to serve on the board of directors of parent company Philip Morris in the 2000s
