Christopher Scott Murphy is an American lawyer and politician who has served as a junior United States Senator from Connecticut since 2013. As a member of the Democratic Party, he previously served in the United States House of Representatives, representing the 5th Congressional District of Connecticut from 2007 to 2013. Previously elected to Congress, Murphy was a member of both houses of the Connecticut General Assembly, each serving two terms in the Connecticut House of Representatives and the Connecticut Senate. Murphy ran for the US Senate in 2012 after longtime incumbent Joe Lieberman announced in January 2011 that he would resign in politics instead of running for a fifth term. He defeated former Connecticut Foreign Minister Susan Bysiewicz in the Democratic primary, then defeated Republican candidate Linda McMahon for free seat in the general election. Murphy, 39 years old at the time, was the youngest senator in the 11th National Assembly
