In 2007, he was elected President of Nicaragua for the second time, as a leader of the socialist Sandinista National Liberation Front. He previously held the office between 1985 and 1990.
José Daniel Ortega Saavedra is a Nicaraguan politician who has been President of Nicaragua since 2007; before that, he served as head of Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990, first as the military's coordinator for national reconstruction, then as president. Head of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, he has implemented policies aimed at achieving left-wing reforms across Nicaragua. Over the following years, Ortega's left-wing politics became more and more moderate, pursuing pro-business policies and even a partnership with the Catholic Church, with his government. Strong anti-abortion measures were introduced in the 2000s and through strong religious rhetoric by Ortega, formerly atheism. Born into a working-class family, Ortega fought against dictator Nicaragua Anastasio Somoza Debayle at an early age and joined the underground movement against his government.
