Earl Christian Campbell, nicknamed The Tyler Rose, is an American professional soccer player who has run the National Football League for the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints. Known for his aggressive, punishing and tackling style of running, Campbell has been recognized as one of the best running defenders in NFL history. Campbell played college football for the Texas Longhorns, where he won the Heisman Trophy and won the United States Consensus title during his senior season, among many other awards. He was first drafted by the Oilers in 1978 and had an immediate influence in the tournament, winning the NFL Rookie of the Year award. Earl Campbell was named NFL Forward of the Year for each of his first seasons, averaging nearly 1,700 yards per season. He won the AP NFL's Most Valuable Player award in 1979 after leading the league in hits and hits.
