Eric Patrick Clapton, is an English guitarist, singer and songwriter, and rock and blues musician. He is the only one to have been featured three times at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and individually as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been regarded as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton is second on Rolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth on Gibson's list of "The 50 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". He also ranked fifth on Time magazine's 2009 "10 best electric guitar players" list. After playing in a number of local bands, Clapton joined the Yardbirds in 1963, replacing Top founding guitarist. Topham. Dissatisfied with the Yardbirds' change from blues rock to more radio-friendly pop rock, Clapton left in 1965 to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, with whom he played on an album.

He married Pattie Boyd on March 27, 1979, and then Melia McEnery on January 1, 2002, following their divorce in June 1988. Conor, his only son, died tragically when he leapt out of a bathroom window at the age of four and a half, inspiring Clapton's song"Tears in Heaven". Clapton's four daughters are Julie, Ruth, Sophie, and Ella.
